Nunavut is Canada's newest territory, founded April 1st, 1999. It's also Canada's largest territory, making up a fifth of it's land mass and spanning three time zones. The territory is comprised of mainland Nunavut and many islands sprinkled across the Arctic Ocean, extending upwards to the North Pole.
Nunavut is home to 29,000 people, spread across 28 communities. 85% of its people are aboriginal Inuit. If you enjoy absorbing unique cultures Nunavut offers some unique opportunities for building experiences you'll always treasure. You'll want to plan your travel schedule to take in local hamlet celebrations. On Baffin Island the Inuit still hunt, trap and fish for survival. For the outdoorsman, local outfitters can provide extraordinary hunting and fishing adventures. Most of the hamlets offer tours by local Inuit residents. Enjoy the invigorating cool arctic air in your face on a Ski-Doo as you view muskoxen, caribou, polar bears and arctic foxes in their natural habitat. Most of the Nunavut hamlets are near the Arctic Ocean due to the Inuit people's reliance on the sea for survival. In the summer seals and majestic whales can photographed up close from a boat. If you're at the right place at the right time you can hear the crash of a new iceberg breaking off of a glacier into the black waters of the ocean.
If you're hoping to explore parts of Northern Canada that have been touched least by our fast-paced southern city life, you'll love Nunavut.
