Travel to Northern Quebec

Dress warmly on your travel to Northern Quebec to fully enjoy dogsledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or polar camping. This is glacier country where temperatures average -25° C in winter and reach a summer high of only 5° C.
The wild and untamed land at Quebec’s northern limits is called Nunavik, which means “the place where we live” in Inuktitut. In this breathtaking wilderness where a million caribou roam, there are only about 10,000 people scattered in 14 villages which are separated from each other by hundreds of kilometers of tundra. Only Kuujjuaq, Puvirnituq, Inukjuak and Salluit have more than 1,000 residents.
Most of the residents of Nunavik are Inuit, whose lives are inextricably linked to the land. Cree, Naskapi and Quebecois make up the tiny minority.
Nunavik is only accessed by bush plane but remote colorful villages, the ethereal Aurora Borealis, pristine air, polar bears, walruses, beluga and the rare narwhal whales make a Northern Quebec vacation an unforgettable and worthwhile trip.
There are five craters carved out of the earth by meteorites from outer space in Nunavik, one of the largest being the 1.4million year old Pingualuit. The almost infinitely deep lake (its depth is equal to the height of a 145-storey skyscraper) that has formed in the crater contains some of the world’s purest water.
Meanwhile, the rivers and seas of Nunavik are so filled with feisty salmon, trout and artic char that even the clumsiest angler is bound to land a catch. Catch and release programs ensure conservation.
Kayak in a pristine fiord or trek to Pingualuit while looking out for inushuks, the standing man stone monuments used as markers by early travelers. Shop for elegant Inuit carvings, visit archaeological sites in the Qikertaaluk & Qajartalik Islands or participate in a snow sculpture contest at the Festival les Neiges in Puvirnituq. The possibilities are endless in Nunavik.
Accommodations in Northern Quebec include small hotels, lodges, heated fishing cabins, sleeping bags and tents. Lodgings are simple and tending to the rustic in the wilderness. But when you are surrounded by such untamed beauty, living as close to the land seems the right thing to do.
