Polar bears, Churchill, Manitoba

» Northern Manitoba Accommodations - Hotels & Lodges

Throw away your cell phone and prepare to commune with nature when you travel to Northern Manitoba. The Northern Lights provide the nightlife here in the treeless tundra where wildlife is abundant and fishing, hunting, canoeing, trekking and wildlife photo safaris are the things to do.

Eco-tourism has become the lifeblood of Churchill, a port on Southern Hudson Bay, which is also known as the polar bear capital of the world.  The population of this desolate town, mainly Inuit, Cree and white,  expands significantly in summer when tourists flock to view the polar bears and the schools of white beluga whales which congregate here for 6 months until November. Wildflowers carpet the tundra in the warmer months and it is not uncommon to see polar bears relaxing among the purple and white blooms.

The polar bears come ashore in late June when the ice starts to melt and wait till November for the ice to reform while thousands of beluga whales frolic and play around the mouth of the Churchill River.

Nearby Wapusk Park is an area where polar bears give birth to their young in subterranean or snow caves. It is one of the largest maternity denning areas for polar bears but is also the home to hundreds of species of migratory birds including the rare Ross’s Gull from Siberia and the  great grey owl. In the meantime, the Canadian snow goose is fast expanding in population. Caribou find shelter here in winter and give birth in late spring.

On your Northern Manitoba vacation, come up close to a polar bear (or bears) in a safe and comfortable tundra buggy, keep your eyes peeled for the artic fox or the snowy white owl, kayak or snorkel and swim with the beluga whales. Go for an exhilarating dog sledding ride or chill by exploring Inuit carvings at the Eskimo Museum in Churchill or massive fortifications at the Prince of Wales Fort National Historic site.

For  accommodations in Northern Manitoba, there are inns with cozy fireplaces, three and four star hotels, log cabins or spacious suites, a number of which are wheelchair accessible.
